I went out with a girlfriend last night and learned something new from her. Apparently, the reason I was under the impression that she never got rejected, that everybody loved her, and that she was plain and simply a rock-star, was because she never talked about the failures she encountered in life. It's not that they didn't happen. She just never shared those pride swallowing stories. She only talks about the positive stuff. I honestly don't think I have the restraint (yet) in my personal character to only share the good stuff with my friends. I could (and I guess I am) defend the position, that it's nice to be real about what you are going through, no matter what it is. Authenticity and vulnerability rocks. The compelling thing about my friend is that she definitely is authentic. She is the real deal. It seems like a life skill worth learning: Learn to keep the humiliating stories to yourself. Check. Learn to promote the stories that make you look good. Check. I'll work on it.
