4th of July

This year, the fourth of July was loads of fun. I went to Sonoma, as usual, and watched the fireworks from the grassy fields next to General Vallejo's house. At first, it looked like there was going to be a group of us...which dwindled down, in the end to two couples. The other car load of people never made it out of Petaluma. Sometimes wrangling a bunch of people together can be a little bit challenging. Oh well...so some of us were in P-town watching the fireworks. The rest of us: Mac, Bean, Katrina and I had front-row seats for a beautiful fireworks show. We brought a large soft blanket and spread out. Mac was sweet enough to carry the bulk of everything from the car and actually set up while I went looking for my friends. I have to say...the cute boy picked a pretty nice spot. :)

On our way out of town, we picked up some tri-tip from Oliver's and various other goodies to nosh for our pick-nick dinner. Bean and Katrina brought the beverages. It felt good watching the fireworks...falling back into a *happy* tradition of mine. I guess those are the things that you do, in order to rebuild your happiness.

Surrounding us, as we watched the fireworks, there was a cacophony of various cries from the crowd. Some were cute and funny, like the 4-year old little girl who kept exclaiming with such sincerity things like: "This is the best fourth of July ever!". Some were just the average hoots and cheers as the show really got under way. And then there were the others. -The annoying group of yahoo's who unfortunately sat directly behind us and kept calling out things like "Penis!", "Homer Simpson!", "Freedom isn't free!"...on and on and on. The first time it was a little funny. But it got old quick. Apparently not to them thought because they kept it up throughout the entire show. At some point, a small single-prop aircraft began to circle the fireworks. Which "ruined it" for the yahoo's sitting behind us. -This I found very amusing, since they had been "ruining it" for the rest of us.

When the show was over, our group sat and relaxed merrily talking and laughing away. From experience, I've learned that you have two good options: 1. run for the car immediately and peel out of the parking lot before anyone else gets back to theirs. or 2. relax and watch the stars and hang out a while longer, giving the throngs of people time to sit in their cars...until slowly, the traffic moves through and by the time you get to your car...there's no waiting. :) We took option 2.

Katrina even was nice enough to take a picture for the yahoo's to commemorate the occasion. (she's such a nice girl!)

Sometime after the crowds had started to clear, I noticed a heap of stuff right next to us. "Somebody left their bag of garbage there."  -Ooops! Turns out I was wrong. It was the small woman who kept calling out "beautiful" throughout the show. She was drunk and had passed out. She started talking in her sleep, and it became apparent that she had undergone some sort of trauma in her life.

It reminded me of all of those sad and lost souls that I would come across in the SNF's The old woman in the hallway, who was so distraught. So sure that I was her daughter and that she had to make things right with me. She felt so bad. I couldn't convince her that I was actually somebody else, and that we were in a medical facility. That I was actually there to see *my* mother at the end of the hallway. She grabbed onto my hand and looked deeply, pleadingly into my eyes. The only thing that I could do for her, was play along. I forgave her. I pretended to be her daughter, and told her that everything was going to be all right. That she was safe and loved. And that everything was OK. It calmed her down immediately. She sat back into her wheelchair with a feeling of relief. Some part of me felt a little bad for my deception. But I also thought "Well...what can I really do to help this woman feel OK right here and now?"

Mac suggested that we give the woman our blanket. To which I thought immediately "No way! My mom gave me this blanket." It was one of the very last things my mother ever gave me. I remember at the time the frustration that I had felt over her gift. I didn't want her to spend any money on me. But then, in subsequent years, I was glad that she had. It was a large, soft, pale grass-green blanket. The texture of it even looked a bit like grass. I can't tell you how many times I fished that blanket out of the dryer and wrapped it around my mom. Or the pizza Friday's that we would spend snuggled up underneath it as we watched movies and ate popcorn. So when Mac suggested giving it to this homeless woman, my heart clamped down and said NO. The woman must have heard us talking about it because she asked us if we had a blanket we could give her. She then went on to tell us how she was so cold. Which also went straight to my heart, and overrided my *no*. I thought about all of those times that my mother needed somebody's love and nurturance. And how in this world, it is so easy to *not give*...to ignore. To turn away from our opportunities to be of service to others simply because it is in our own best interest or even worse...just because it's easy. -Yep. I was guilty of that. I was being selfish and small. Guilty as charged.

"Do you have a home?" I asked. -I wanted to make sure, before I gave her my beloved wubby...that she wasn't just some rich drunk Sonoma housewife who had passed out in the field and would toddle on home in the morning.

"Not now." she replied. (oh.)

"OK. We have a blanket for you. We'll give it to you in a minute after we've packed up our stuff."

"Thank you."

We packed up the remainder of our pick-nick, and put a small pile of individual containers of food right next to her with an apple juice for when she woke up in the morning. Then, Tim and I covered her up with the blanket.

"There you go sweetie."

As we walked back to the car, Mac kissed me and promised me that he would buy me a new blanket. He said that it was *his* mom coming out in him. Her generosity of spirit. I know that in many ways, Mac's mother contributed quite a bit to the world around her. Giving that woman my blanket was the right thing to do. I can't say that it was easy. It was my favorite blanket and in some way felt a bit like letting go of my mother, not just a blanket. But it was the right thing to do.

...Hey...after all...it's just a blanket right? I can buy a new one. No biggie.

I've Been Going Down For A Long Time!

Monday, November 29, 2010 at 7:20pm

Weight training after work today with Jeff. He had me doing a new thing today -a one legged lunge, utilizing the bench. It may look simple (in fact it may even *be* simple) but for me...it was harder than it appeared. I found that my balance was all off today. Just standing in position to begin was hard enough. But actually lowering my body down while maintaining my balance and focus, keeping my hands on my hips, and my posture upright, proved to be very challenging. Wiggling back and forth and trying to look like I wasn't about to topple over was funny. Then I said something about it being "really hard"...and "you made it look so easy."

Jeff then replied: "Well I've been going down for a llllloooooooonnnng time."

[Beat.]

[Beat.]

At that point, I had my nose all scrunched up in concentration. Sweat on my brow. Trying to look cool.
-It failed. "Huh" I said. "That didn't sound right."

"I know. I know. I thought that right before the words came out of my mouth...but then I just said. Say it. Say it."

(Insert laughter here) I totally fell over laughing while trying to do my lunges. -Repeatedly. :) Hahahaha

Don't spend too much time on this unless you have a lot of time on your hands. List 20 books you've read and that have left a mark. The first 20 you can recall, in no particular order of preference.  It shouldn't take you more than 15 minutes. Tag 15 friends, including me because I want to know what my friends picked. To do this: go to your "Notes" on your profile and paste these Rules on a new note, type up your 20 books and tag away!

Ineffable-shmeffable!

April 16th, 2010; 11;58 PM

Current mood:warm
Beautiful bald man. My friend. One who talks with me in early morning chats. While the rest of the world is still sleeping, or slowly rising. We smile and ponder the changing scenery around us. Exchanging ideas, feelings, and hope. I'm glad to have you as a friend. Closer to my heart than you could ever imagine. I am learning from you that it's ok to *not* be upbeat at all times...because sometimes, one cannot feign interest in the thoughts of children, or adults too afraid to be themselves and live dangerously. I love you dear friend. PS. Chambray blue looks nice on you. Everyday.

Movie! Yay!

Aug. 15th, 2009 at 7:52 PM

...So I called Bud. He was really happy to hear from me. I asked him what he was doing tonight, and he was about to go get dinner with his parents and then go visit his friend Adam. But then he sounded like he wanted to try to find a way to see me tonight too. I told him not to worry, to go see his friend and that we could hang out some other time. He said he was going to call me later on tonight. After contemplating movie times for District 9, and deciding that I would just go alone (I'm a big girl...fully capable of seeing a movie solo on a Saturday night...It doesn't mean that I'm a loser...it means that I'm *liberated*!) Anyhoo...I gave him a call (which he answered excitedly right away! -Good sign.) And told him to go see his friend quick, and then come see a latenight movie with me! To which he was really excited and happy! Yay! I've decided that waiting an hour to go see the next showing with said cute AND NICE boy, is better than going alone. I'm off! And we are just friends. I'm going to have fun and enjoy myself. Yay! The fact that he could be an underwear model has nothing (well ok...little) to do with how much fun I have hanging out with him. :-) I consider the arm candy aspect a small but nice perk to his wonderful personality.

Good Luck And Bon Voyage!

June 18th, 2009; 6:32 PM

Current mood:cheerful
If we all go after our dreams, eventually we will all part ways. Hopefully we will also meet again, in better times and circumstances. Older, stronger, kinder, and more filled with contentment. You are about to depart on your venture. And I am happy for you. There is no reason for a gift. You want to travel light. So I will simply be there to send you off in style and with much love. Tonight we drink a toast to your good fortune. And a destiny that you chose for yourself.

Sweet!

Tim called me today. I'm glad. I was feeling a little weird about our last conversation. It was not a big deal at all. And I'm really glad that he reached out to me first to make that clear. We laughed and joked like we typically do. Until of course his battery died on his phone. :-(

I'm glad he's my friend.

My Ladies

June 4th, 2009; 11:25 PM
Ladies night was awesome!
Not enough time to share all of the good news. But at least I did get to share one major point...and thank god my girls get it! It feels good to have a group of friends who have your back and fully understand. Thank you strong, beautiful, fabulous women!

Feel The Beauty. Let It Soak Down To Your Bones And Make You Really Happy.

June 1st, 2009; 1:34 AM

Current mood:inspired
Today was really amazing! I had so much fun. And it was just chock full of adventure, beauty, unknown and unexplored places, good food, fun, friends, and laughter. It really was amazing. The beach was beautiful. The bluff was inspiring. The tri-tip was succulent! And the never-ending vistas that seemed to reach out and touch that place in my heart that makes me feel alive, and happy, and totally free, and excited was spectacular!

It felt good. It felt like home. I'm really excited about this. It was really great sharing the adventure. It made me really think of all of the possibilities..and what it would feel like to actually be there with my friends. It is exactly how I want my life to be. It's really exciting to take your dreams and make them tangible. Make them what you actually experience in a daily manner. To feel it, be there, smell it, taste it, and let it juice you up and energize you. We got out of the car, and the first thing we all noticed was the air. It was salty. And wonderful. We could taste the sea on our lips and tongues. The sun was gorgeous. And the grass in the field blew in the wind. We had a picnic by the sea. I brought a new food. Something that I had never had before today. It was a soft French cheese. -Not brie. It was delish. The girl at the cheese counter told me that it had mushrooms in it, although I didn't see any, or overtly taste them either. But the cheese had a nice subtle earthiness to it, that I attribute to the mushrooms. Having a new food really added to the experience. Today was all about the beauty of the unknown. And growing and reaching towards your dreams and goals.

You know what's really funny? My Horoscope was completely accurate today:

Scorpio
10/23 – 11/21

If your social life is starting to feel too boring, take time today to cook up some new ideas on how to liven it up a bit! Why not take a walk on the wild side? The people over there seem so much more interesting, don't they? Step out and go somewhere you have never been before with a few of your favorite people. They want to spend some time with you, so why not do your friends a favor and grace them with an hour or two of your time?

It was also completely accurate the day before...although that wasn't as nice as today.
Public information is suddenly going private right now. Secrets abound, and everyone is shutting doors and talking in whispers. But put a lid on your paranoia -- this is not a development you should worry about just yet. In fact, it could signal some good news for you soon, so just wait things out and try not to worry too much in the meantime. The big issues are totally under control, and you're on a positive path -- albeit with a few bumps along the way.

Weight Lifting (Down There)

So we're almost out of Depends. (I know this is really cool stuff to talk about right?) (That was me being facetious in case you didn't catch that.) And I'm wondering about where the best place to buy them would be...and also if the small/medium size will fit La Suprema AND be enough to hold her pee. (That lady can pee like a racehorse!) I'm looking online and there's a company that does nothing but sell supplies for incontinence...and they sell *this*...

Feminine Personal Trainer®
Imagine your pelvic floor muscles (the ones responsible for holding back urine) being strong enough to lift up to one whole pound. Impossible? Not with the FPT (Feminine Personal Trainer®) now available in two weights - 12 oz. and 16oz.

ONE WHOLE POUND!!! Holy kershmackerbies! I just keep thinking about those FedExes at work that we send out. (A pound can be surprisingly heavy.) I'm not sure my vajayjay could lift a pound. And there's something about the wording in this blurb that is just a little funny to me. "Impossilbe? *Not* with the FTP!" -Why nothing's impossible...for a girl with a dream! ;-)

I am a bit curious too. I just couldn't take it if my vagina was *also* completely out of shape. My abs? -Yes...I can handle that because almost everybody else I know has the same problem...but my vagina? I like to think of it as being in *peak* physical condition. ...Like if my vagina could take a walk without me...it would be climbing Mount Everest! "Oooh look! Vanessa's vagina is climbing to the summit today! ...and *without* a sherpa too!"

Hahahaha, pretty funny. The idea of inserting cold steel that weighs one pound into my vagina doesn't seem that appealing somehow. Duck lips once a year is enough.

What's *not* appealing about that??? (Kidding)..But seriously..."Duck lips"? In your vagina??? Hmmm...explain yourself.

"duck lips" is a nickname for the speculum used in our lovely annual gyn exams.

OH! Yes..they do look like duck lips don't they? I had a physical today...I also got my annual gyn exam done too. I was actually surprised. I've never had it all in one shot. I wasn't expecting the duck lips today. It was so awkward too. She had her fingers in me, and we were talking about what kind of dog I had...and if she was high strung. I accidentally said that the dog got nervous...I have no idea what I was saying! My dog doesn't get nervous. She's bouncy and robust. *I* was the one who was having a hard time having a *normal* conversation with someone's fingers in me. Yay. Good times.
