Last night in class, we were discussing Medea. Apparently, I was the only person who sympathized with Medea. ....Or so it seemed, when I was the only one to voice it. Bah. I hate moments like that. It's not like I thought Medea would make a great, and trustworthy, babysitter..."Here Medea...you can watch the kids for a night...We'll be back after the movie." ...I just thought that she was cast in a very negative light, even before she killed her children. And it was in large part because of her intelligence. It's true..she seemed to resort to killing rather easily, but in every case it was a good strategy. I felt like even today...with the class thinking Medea was wholly evil...there is this pressure...where we don't like to see women as masters of strategy. Women who dare to do that are usually cast as bad, manipulative, or lacking in feminine qualities of the heart. It just bothers me because men can do it and are revered for it...but a woman...is supposed to be nicer than that. :-P
