I Am Not Shy!

Floppy Bunny Mess
I am not shy. I hate being perceived as shy. *I* am friendly and gregarious. I can make friends easily. Arg...there are however situations in life where I get branded as shy...(when I'm not *really*) and it just seems to stick or haunt me long after the incident happens where someone says that they thought I was shy...and then...strangely...I end up living down to their expectations of me. I *behave* as if I am shy when I am around them! ACK! Why do I do this?!  I can think of a certain group of people who thought I was shy...when really it was that I felt uncomfortable around them. They were a very tight knit clique. And honestly we *could* have been great friends..but there were so many things that set us apart...I felt very much like a cheetah in a pack of gazelle's! I made them uncomfortable..and they made me uncomfortable. ...Maybe I was a gazelle in a pack of cheetah's?
But this latest thing is about work! BAH! One day I'm branded as being "shy" much to my employers shock...as she knows me apart from work and had always thought of me as very outgoing and fun. (I am really! *sniff*) hahaha...BUT anyhoo....When I approach someone and they give me the "go away vibe"...then....yeah...I want to go away. I don't want to be rude or pushy. I don't want to force myself on anyone who doesn't want me around. I would love to be of service...but I don't want to pressure anyone. It turns out this has to do with shoplifters....I'm not very good at knowing when a person might be a shoplifter. Anyhoo...Thea (my boss) told me that a shoplifter *will* in fact be rude to you and just give you that "go away vibe" because they don't want you to be there to see what they are doing. This makes perfect sense to me. And if I have the greenlight to be a tad bit overbearing..then I will do my job. If Thea wants me to hang around and fake primping the store and shadow a customer...then I will. I hate doing that. I feel horribly uncomfortable doing that. It makes me think of situations where I was treated like a potential shoplifter and it did not make me want to buy anything or ever come again to that store...but....whatev. So...one day she's telling me that I'm not talking to the customers enough...and that I'm kind of hiding out behind the register...and so I take her critique seriously...and try to adapt my behavior to what she wants...because it really isn't a big deal to me. I can be more outgoing. -Not hard. ...she also tells me to *never* ask "Have you been helped?", "Can I help you find something?", "Are you looking for anything in particular today?" or "If I can be of any assistance please let me know." She thinks that these are not the way to get a person to tell you if they are interested in anything....she wants me to look for the vacant look...where they're looking off into space trying to decide weather or not the item's a fit for them...and then go talk to them...but not about anything in particular. Just talk. Be friendly. Hang out and make casual conversation with them...build up rapport...and then *they* will ask you about something. So on Saturday....I did that. And now...I'm getting critiqued for being to chatty! ACK! One minute I'm shy...the next minute I talk too much with the customers...They're having so much fun talking to me that they forget to buy things apparently! BAH! I'll find the balance in what she wants...in the meantime...BAH! I am not shy!
