Day Fourteen and Fifteen of the Juice Fast

Day Fourteen and fifteen...Well... I took a couple of days off. I had an IUD inserted yesterday. After being in a monogamous relationship for a while, and deciding that I really *don't* want kids any time in the next couple of years, I decided to go ahead and get an IUD inserted.

IUD's have come a long way since the sexual revolution of the 70's, when they were relatively new in this country and the kinks weren't completely worked out. I recall my mother warning me to never get an IUD because they could cause infertility and all sorts of problems in a woman's uterus. -A truly horrifying place to have problems!

When I went to my primary care physician and requested an IUD, she told me that I would have to sign up for a class about long-term contraception, be tested for Chlamydia (don't ask why that specific STI test is administered...It's just standard issue for getting an IUD, they want to make sure that you don't have *any* STI's but especially that one, as I hear it can cause inflammation in your uterus which is a particularly bad combination with an IUD.) And lastly, I had to make sure I wasn't pregnant. Then, once all of that was done, I could schedule the insertion for the tail end of my next period. They like to put them in then because a woman's cervix is most dilated after her period, which makes for a slightly easier insertion, especially among women who have never had a child (me!).The procedure only took about 15 minutes, but was one of the most uncomfortable few moments of my life to date. When the Dr. actually pushed through my cervix, I had to grip the table. There was this very sweet nurse who kept telling me to relax...that tensing up would make everything tighter and therefore more painful. She asked me what I liked to do to relax...I told her I liked to get a massage. So she suggested that I imagine that this was just like getting a massage. HA! That idea was so funny to me, I couldn't help but laugh. Yes...this is *exactly* like getting a massage...in my uterus...by a stranger...with a speculum, and an IUD insertion tool. Yep. Just like a day at the spa. ;p For the briefest of moments, I thought "Geeze if this is how painful it is to have something as small as a pea go through your cervix, I don't want kids!" I mean, I cannot imagine how painful that would be. When it was done, the Dr. did an ultrasound to make sure that the IUD was in place, and then I was free to go. I felt nauseated and crampy. On our way out to the car, the Cute Boy held my hand, and said he really felt for all of the pain and stuff that women had to go through. "You women do a lot. You have to go through a lot. I'm thankful for all that you do.". Hearing that made me feel better. It was comforting to have a teammate who appreciated the physical sacrifices and responsibilities that women go through. I know, I have a good man.

When we got home, I made some horribly inedible tortillas and had a small bowl of beans. Then I fed my hockey puck of flatbread to the dogs, and relaxed with a heating pad. I could feel the tissues around my uterus were inflamed and hard, and I marveled at the fact that my uterus (an almost imaginary thing to me...like unicorns, and the tooth fairy) was actually real...AND it was exactly where they had always told me it was. I've never had a baby, never felt anything grow. or push. or stretch there...so to actually feel it (my ute) was kind of amazing and cool.

So I took yesterday off from the juice fast and just recovered and relaxed. That extended into today, as I was still feeling a bit crampy and tired. But tomorrow, I'm back on it. At my weigh in at the doctor's office, I discovered that I had lost another two pounds. Which is all pretty encouraging. I'm finally beginning to poop normally and feel better from the inside. So progress is still coming along, and I feel pretty good about that.

Things I learned today:

  1. It's OK to take a break to take care of yourself.
  2. The Cute Boy continues to impress me and I feel very happy with him by my side in life.
  3. If I didn't have health insurance, getting an IUD would have cost me somewhere around $1,000 -for something that is little more than a small piece of mass produced plastic with a little string attached! I think it's completely crazy and just flat out wrong that women often times have to inequitably shoulder the expense, the responsibility, and the pain of contraception, childbirth, and child rearing. There needs to be a cultural revolution to change this.

The 2nd Thanksgiving

Dear La Suprema,
I love you. And I miss you so much. I don't know how to do this without you. I was listening to a book on tape today "The Art of Racing in the Rain". It's about a guy and his dog. The whole story is told from the perspective of the dog, Enzo. It's a good story. And it seems so familiar. The narrative style, the intimacy and play between the dog and his owner. Enzo is old. He's at the end of his life. In the story, Enzo has an accident, and his owner hoists him up into the tub and cleans him up. Cradling him gently. "I wanted him to see the obvious, that it is OK to let me go...He needs me to free him, to be brilliant. He is so brilliant. He shines. I will miss him, and he will miss me, but I can't let sentimentality cloud my plan." He plans on coming back in his next life as a man, and finding his owner, to shake his hand and congratulate him. He has so much faith and love for this person. And it reminds me so much of you, it hurts. It also makes me think of this whole thing in a different way. Maybe, none of this was meant to hurt? Maybe the subtlety and nuances of human communication and understanding, have clouded the message that I am supposed to embrace. Perhaps this dog has it right? Maybe you had to go, to free me. Because you loved me so much. I would never have left you. I would have spent the rest of my life loving you and taking care of you. God I miss you so much. Mac and I have been having some stupid fights. He asked me how I was feeling about Thanksgiving, and if I wanted to talk about it. Usually, I don't. I don't want to talk about it. But I did this time. Compared to last year and the first Thanksgiving without you, this year was better. This year, everything felt like a let down. Pleasant but numb. Last year was a combination of terrible and beautiful. So I guess numb is an upgrade? But I wanted good. I miss family. I miss making you happy and seeing you smile. I miss hugs. I miss having someone who loves me so much, they just light up every time I see them. God I love you. Wherever you are. I love you.

Dry Earth

My life feels like hard earth right now. Earth, that has not grown a seed in a very long time. Dry. Ungiving. Parched and thirsty. Dense and difficult to change. Difficult to break into and move. But even so...I will work to water this dry earth. Giving it the love and water that it needs. Softening it with my belief and encouragement. Loving it when it is dry. And knowing that in time, it will soften. That I can enrich it with my life's experience. Fertilize it. Deepen the softness. Pull up the soft earth. Bringing air and life into it once again. Be patient. Real happiness is coming.

Interring My Mother's Ashes

This year has been a year of painful transitions for me. Things which I never thought would happen, have come to pass. And it's been hard on all of us. Next week, I will be laying my mothers ashes to rest. I've purchased a plot, in the same cemetery where my grandparents have been buried. MacArthur and I went there a couple of days ago. I can't exactly remember the last time I went to visit my Grandparents graves. But I remember doing it a lot with my mother. We would go, and bring flowers. Sometimes we would just go and lay on the grass together and look up at the clouds in the sky, and let our hearts do the talking to our ancestors. I feel strange this week. Tense. Kind of like that "deep bone ache" that my podiatrist was warning me about...only it's not in my recently healed bones...it's a feeling that I have in me. Deep down in me. My heart. My mind. The fiber of my being.

I promised my mom that I would not hold onto her ashes forever. I would like to have them buried before the 1 year anniversary of her death. My Uncle Courtney asked that I wait till August, so that he could be here with me to bury my mom. I've waited. The waiting has been hard on me. It feels like dying slowly. The pressure of all of this unfinished business...grief that hasn't stopped flowing...has been very heavy on me this past year. I'm looking forward to interring her ashes and finishing up her headstone. I think it will give me a small bit more, of that peace which I am searching for. Uncle Courtney can't make it in August. But he will be here in September. By then, the headstone will be cast and in place. In a way, it seems better this way. In a way it seems so much more like what it was like when she was alive. In the end, again, it will be she and I.

I miss you so much mom. And I don't know when my heart will stop hurting. When breathing will become easier. I don't know when the memory of your illness will fade...and all that will be left are the good times. But I want that. I want it so badly. I feel myself grasping at life, trying to come back to life myself. But so far, it still hurts. I still can't believe that you're dead. I can't believe that everything has fallen apart. I don't know what to do. I am afraid of my life. It hurts so much without you. It feels like the center of my heart is missing. I wish you were here. If you exist...where ever you are...I hope that you are happy and loved. I love you, and I will love you forever.

Comforting Message Of The Day:

You are loved.
And you will be happy again one day.
You will make it through this.
All of this pain is temporary.
And one day...
it will all blow away.
You'll see.
One day...
All of this pain will be gone.
It will blow away like nothing was ever there.
And all that will be left, is you.
And you will be happy again.

Walking Through Fire

Friday, May 27, 2011 at 12:58am

So I'm fucked.

How do I say this?

My life is on fire.

This

Feels

Like

The

End

And

The

Beginning

Of

My

Life.

The world and it's trees are all on fire in my universe. The birds have fallen from the sky, charred and blackened. The hearts, the love, have all been blown away with the dry desert wind. And that wind is still blowing through my heart. I hope it blows me away.

Every

Last

Part

Of

Me.

I Surrender

Wednesday, March 23, 2011 at 9:36pm

If my heart could talk, well...right now, it wouldn't even be able to. Sadly, it wouldn't be able to find words. It misses her. It misses her so much and is so damaged. So hurt. So wounded, that it can't even speak. All it can do is howl. My heart would howl to her, screaming out that it misses her. “I miss you. I miss you. I miss you. I miss you so much that it hurts. It hurts without you. I miss you. I wish I could hug you right now. I wish you were here right now hugging me too. I miss you. I love you so much, I can't even imagine the world without you. I miss you.” It would howl.

It feels like a bad ending. Un-real. Like /this/is/NOT/my/life. /This/is/NOT/how/the/story/goes. /This/is/not/how/it/went. Like the great story-teller got lost. Forgot the way it was supposed to be read out, and went off script entirely. Created a dramatic twist, a tragedy that was supposed to be a calm happy story. I can't get past the feeling that her life was unfinished.  That it was meant to go on. She was supposed to be here now. Happy. Content. Healthy. Here. My mom was amazing. My mom was supposed to be my family forever. Christmas. Thanksgiving. Milestones in life were supposed to be shared. Babies were going to be born and held. Loved and known. She was going to sing to them. Laugh with them. And smile upon them. They were going to develop a special relationship with her. I was going to grow old with her as my Rock of Gibraltar. I was going to be able to go out into the world and explore, feeling safe because I would know that she would always be here if I needed her. No matter where I was, she would only be a phone call away, and if I ever needed her, she would protect me. Shelter me. Heal me. Soothe me through life's tribulations. But she can't heal this. It can't be healed. I still don't know if I will survive this.

As a child I needed her. I was shy. Gentle. And needing of support and encouragement. She was so vibrant and fearless. Vivian. It was the best name for her. She exemplified it's root meaning. She was life. I still need her. I still need my mom. I can't shake that. Can't get rid of that instinctual bond. That feeling which makes my body and heart ache with longing. I feel like a soldier -fucked up in the head, and fresh from war. For the most part, I can pass. I'm still able to make a joke. Laugh. And somewhat function. But compared to how I am naturally...compared to who I was when she was healthy, before I could imagine any of this, I am a dimmed down version. A light sketch when I should be bold strokes; a vivid illustration. I have psychological issues now. Scarring from this battle. My mind is broken now. I can't attach myself the same way anymore. I can't shake the fucked up twisting of my brain. The horrific replay of her primal moan as she left this world. Her last breath escaping her. And that horrible gurgle of fluids as I pulled her limp body into a sitting-up position, so that I could get some leverage and position myself to pull her gently and quickly onto the floor. Getting a hard and solid plane underneath her so that I could give her CPR. That horrible noise and feeling of breaking her bones as I gave her that first compression. Totally fucked up. Not able to keep my word. Not able to keep the focus. Not able to remember that I had told her that I would be here for her to the end. And let her die peacefully at home. I knew that was the plan, and I couldn't stick to it. I couldn't handle it. It hurt me so much. I failed her. I will never forgive myself for that failing. I feel like I have post traumatic stress. Flashbacks to the horrible. Pain that won't let go of my heart.

    • Elizabeth Diane Medina It hurts me deeply to feel your pain. However, I don't think you failed Vivian, to the contrary, your actions, made her posible for her, to pass away in the hands of her child. Tha's the way is suppose to be.

My oldest sister had that experience with three (3) of her daughters. Remember that Vivian was an Angel and our Lord wanted her. There is very little we can do mija. We don't understand why things happen in life. You are lucky to have thosebeautiful memories of her tender love, her care and compasion. You have stories to tell you children and they will know her thru you. There are many people who do not have that. In the other hand, there are many people who only have regret of being born from mothers who do not care and as they get older, they don't even want to speak to them. I know that Vivian left because it was her time, I also know that she was happy to feel your devotion and care. I also know that she does not want you to mortify yourself with the idea that you "failed" her because YOU DID NOT! You were her world and at the end of her journey, you were there for her. Eduardo was her husband and he is the one who failed her, not you my beautiful angel. Please be kind to your self, you are not a doctor, not even a paramedic, you did what any loving daughter could do. I will be praying for you, so God will send His Angels to comfort you and grant the peace you need. I suggest you start writing all the beautiful memmories you have of Vvian, so you have plenty of material to share with your children.

You were there for her in every way. She was in pain but not because of you. You chose to be strong and be with her even though she was in pain. You're the vibrant strong woman that chose to be with her, and to help her. You may be weary, but you are not lost. You chose to do something heroic. To live on with out her may seem worse because now you don't have her to take care of, to be strong for, but to understand that you can be strong for yourself, that you can be your own hero, is a gift I think right now she's giving to you.

Oh, love. You did everything for your mother and she knew how much you loved her. You did more than I even thought possible. In what you perceive to be your darkest moments, I see the most incredible light. Whatever moments you may think meant failure are a drop in the bucket compared to everything else. You very clearly did not fail your mother, at least from where I am standing. You loved and cared for her throughout a debilitating disease all on your own. I don't think there is anyone in my life that is as devoted to anything or anyone as you were to your mother. You are your mother's daughter and you carry her excellence, her joyful soul and fighting spirit with you every day. You cannot convince me of anything different, not with any of your words. While I can understand how it may feel that way, I will never believe that you failed your mother, ever. I only see love and hope and I remember Vivian's smile and how she looked at you when she said "I love you."
