4th of July

This year, the fourth of July was loads of fun. I went to Sonoma, as usual, and watched the fireworks from the grassy fields next to General Vallejo's house. At first, it looked like there was going to be a group of us...which dwindled down, in the end to two couples. The other car load of people never made it out of Petaluma. Sometimes wrangling a bunch of people together can be a little bit challenging. Oh well...so some of us were in P-town watching the fireworks. The rest of us: Mac, Bean, Katrina and I had front-row seats for a beautiful fireworks show. We brought a large soft blanket and spread out. Mac was sweet enough to carry the bulk of everything from the car and actually set up while I went looking for my friends. I have to say...the cute boy picked a pretty nice spot. :)

On our way out of town, we picked up some tri-tip from Oliver's and various other goodies to nosh for our pick-nick dinner. Bean and Katrina brought the beverages. It felt good watching the fireworks...falling back into a *happy* tradition of mine. I guess those are the things that you do, in order to rebuild your happiness.

Surrounding us, as we watched the fireworks, there was a cacophony of various cries from the crowd. Some were cute and funny, like the 4-year old little girl who kept exclaiming with such sincerity things like: "This is the best fourth of July ever!". Some were just the average hoots and cheers as the show really got under way. And then there were the others. -The annoying group of yahoo's who unfortunately sat directly behind us and kept calling out things like "Penis!", "Homer Simpson!", "Freedom isn't free!"...on and on and on. The first time it was a little funny. But it got old quick. Apparently not to them thought because they kept it up throughout the entire show. At some point, a small single-prop aircraft began to circle the fireworks. Which "ruined it" for the yahoo's sitting behind us. -This I found very amusing, since they had been "ruining it" for the rest of us.

When the show was over, our group sat and relaxed merrily talking and laughing away. From experience, I've learned that you have two good options: 1. run for the car immediately and peel out of the parking lot before anyone else gets back to theirs. or 2. relax and watch the stars and hang out a while longer, giving the throngs of people time to sit in their cars...until slowly, the traffic moves through and by the time you get to your car...there's no waiting. :) We took option 2.

Katrina even was nice enough to take a picture for the yahoo's to commemorate the occasion. (she's such a nice girl!)

Sometime after the crowds had started to clear, I noticed a heap of stuff right next to us. "Somebody left their bag of garbage there."  -Ooops! Turns out I was wrong. It was the small woman who kept calling out "beautiful" throughout the show. She was drunk and had passed out. She started talking in her sleep, and it became apparent that she had undergone some sort of trauma in her life.

It reminded me of all of those sad and lost souls that I would come across in the SNF's The old woman in the hallway, who was so distraught. So sure that I was her daughter and that she had to make things right with me. She felt so bad. I couldn't convince her that I was actually somebody else, and that we were in a medical facility. That I was actually there to see *my* mother at the end of the hallway. She grabbed onto my hand and looked deeply, pleadingly into my eyes. The only thing that I could do for her, was play along. I forgave her. I pretended to be her daughter, and told her that everything was going to be all right. That she was safe and loved. And that everything was OK. It calmed her down immediately. She sat back into her wheelchair with a feeling of relief. Some part of me felt a little bad for my deception. But I also thought "Well...what can I really do to help this woman feel OK right here and now?"

Mac suggested that we give the woman our blanket. To which I thought immediately "No way! My mom gave me this blanket." It was one of the very last things my mother ever gave me. I remember at the time the frustration that I had felt over her gift. I didn't want her to spend any money on me. But then, in subsequent years, I was glad that she had. It was a large, soft, pale grass-green blanket. The texture of it even looked a bit like grass. I can't tell you how many times I fished that blanket out of the dryer and wrapped it around my mom. Or the pizza Friday's that we would spend snuggled up underneath it as we watched movies and ate popcorn. So when Mac suggested giving it to this homeless woman, my heart clamped down and said NO. The woman must have heard us talking about it because she asked us if we had a blanket we could give her. She then went on to tell us how she was so cold. Which also went straight to my heart, and overrided my *no*. I thought about all of those times that my mother needed somebody's love and nurturance. And how in this world, it is so easy to *not give*...to ignore. To turn away from our opportunities to be of service to others simply because it is in our own best interest or even worse...just because it's easy. -Yep. I was guilty of that. I was being selfish and small. Guilty as charged.

"Do you have a home?" I asked. -I wanted to make sure, before I gave her my beloved wubby...that she wasn't just some rich drunk Sonoma housewife who had passed out in the field and would toddle on home in the morning.

"Not now." she replied. (oh.)

"OK. We have a blanket for you. We'll give it to you in a minute after we've packed up our stuff."

"Thank you."

We packed up the remainder of our pick-nick, and put a small pile of individual containers of food right next to her with an apple juice for when she woke up in the morning. Then, Tim and I covered her up with the blanket.

"There you go sweetie."

As we walked back to the car, Mac kissed me and promised me that he would buy me a new blanket. He said that it was *his* mom coming out in him. Her generosity of spirit. I know that in many ways, Mac's mother contributed quite a bit to the world around her. Giving that woman my blanket was the right thing to do. I can't say that it was easy. It was my favorite blanket and in some way felt a bit like letting go of my mother, not just a blanket. But it was the right thing to do.

...Hey...after all...it's just a blanket right? I can buy a new one. No biggie.

A Wonderful Sunday

I made it to the Trek store and had my bike adjusted to fit me. It's AWESOME. I went for a ride and had a wonderful afternoon. Earlier I caught brunch with Timmy-Bean. 'Twas a good time. On a funny side note. We both ordered the eggs benedict. But I got two end pieces of toast under my eggs. They were tasty, but ridiculously hard to cut. At one point Tim actually offered to cut my food for me. Ha! I was wouldn't hear of it. But by the time I got to the 2nd piece of toast and my hands were giving out, I just let him. He was surprised at how hard it was too. We both had a good laugh over that. It was like a hand grip workout.

Good Luck And Bon Voyage!

June 18th, 2009; 6:32 PM

Current mood:cheerful
If we all go after our dreams, eventually we will all part ways. Hopefully we will also meet again, in better times and circumstances. Older, stronger, kinder, and more filled with contentment. You are about to depart on your venture. And I am happy for you. There is no reason for a gift. You want to travel light. So I will simply be there to send you off in style and with much love. Tonight we drink a toast to your good fortune. And a destiny that you chose for yourself.

Sweet!

Tim called me today. I'm glad. I was feeling a little weird about our last conversation. It was not a big deal at all. And I'm really glad that he reached out to me first to make that clear. We laughed and joked like we typically do. Until of course his battery died on his phone. :-(

I'm glad he's my friend.

Do Not Settle For The Wet Blanket

June 3rd, 2009; 7:26 PM
Current mood:blah
Bah! That was really fun.

I just got off the phone with one of my best friends. My BEST male friend in fact. I finally met his girlfriend last weekend. This is the first girlfriend of his that I have actually met. One I didn't meet because she lived far away, and they broke up shortly after I first met him...and then she left the country.
Another one I didn't meet because it was a very brief and not so serious affair...followed by her leaving the country...
And this one I almost didn't meet because she *was* going to leave the country...but then she stayed a while longer...so I got to meet her. She was so antisocial. It was wierd. She kept her sunglasses on when I first met her. And we all hopped into my car to go on a trip to the beach. She sat in front with me, and immediately took a cell phone call where she got upset with the person she was speaking to, and it made me uncomfortable...So I pulled off at a gas station to give her some privacy to finish her conversation. I was honestly hoping that she would jump in the back seat and talk on her phone back there, and let my friend and I chill out and talk up front -but she didn't. She did eventually get off the phone though -which was nice. And we got underway. On the trip, I kept trying to start up a conversation with her, and include her in the conversation with my friend, but she was very quiet and standoffish. I asked her at one point, what her favorite food was...and instead of saying something like Thai, sushi, or I like ice-cream...she said "Well it depends on what time of day it is...for breakfast my favorite food is a blueberry muffin, for lunch my favorite food is a chicken cesar salad, and for dinner my favorite food is plain pasta with no sauce and broccoli." -Really now? Plain pasta with broccoli??? I am not a fan. I hope that either:

A. she loosens up and relaxes and lets her greatness shine...or
B. she leaves the country...or
C. there is some sort of reason like hereditary-social-ineptitude -I think that could be a disorder...I just made it up though...but still...it seems like something that could be in a psych book somewere no?

Anyhoo...my friend and I talked about it. And he clarified that they weren't serious. And that in reality they probably would break up. And that I shouldn't worry about it. -I won't. He then laughed about what a hypocrite I was for telling him that he was awesome and that he totally could find a better girlfriend than that. And then I laughingly agreed...I AM a hypocrite...and I give my friends carte blanche to speak their minds any time...and tell me how awesome I am!

is this the same male friend who made the monkey throwing poo comment? If so, I briefly observed this same girl (nicknamed applesauce apparently, but she doesn´t know that) and wasn't impressed. Hahaha. oh well.

It is indeed the same friend who made the monkey throwing poo comment...and it is indeed the same girl. And I am seriously NOT impressed either.

PS. When are you coming home so that I can grumble about her lameness face to face with you?

Feel The Beauty. Let It Soak Down To Your Bones And Make You Really Happy.

Today was really amazing! I had so much fun. And it was just chock full of adventure, beauty, unknown and unexplored places, good food, fun, friends, and laughter. It really was amazing. The beach was beautiful. The bluff was inspiring. The tri-tip was succulent! And the never-ending vistas that seemed to reach out and touch that place in my heart that makes me feel alive, and happy, and totally free, and excited was spectacular!

It felt good. It felt like home. I'm really excited about this. It was really great sharing the adventure. It made me really think of all of the possibilities..and what it would feel like to actually be there with my friends. It is exactly how I want my life to be. It's really exciting to take your dreams and make them tangible. Make them what you actually experience in a daily manner. To feel it, be there, smell it, taste it, and let it juice you up and energize you. We got out of the car, and the first thing we all noticed was the air. It was salty. And wonderful. We could taste the sea on our lips and tongues. The sun was gorgeous. And the grass in the field blew in the wind. We had a picnic by the sea. I brought a new food. Something that I had never had before today. It was a soft French cheese. -Not brie. It was delish. The girl at the cheese counter told me that it had mushrooms in it, although I didn't see any, or overtly taste them either. But the cheese had a nice subtle earthiness to it, that I attribute to the mushrooms. Having a new food really added to the experience. Today was all about the beauty of the unknown. And growing and reaching towards your dreams and goals.

You know what's really funny? My Horoscope was completely accurate today:

Scorpio
10/23 – 11/21

If your social life is starting to feel too boring, take time today to cook up some new ideas on how to liven it up a bit! Why not take a walk on the wild side? The people over there seem so much more interesting, don't they? Step out and go somewhere you have never been before with a few of your favorite people. They want to spend some time with you, so why not do your friends a favor and grace them with an hour or two of your time?

It was also completely accurate the day before...although that wasn't as nice as today.
Public information is suddenly going private right now. Secrets abound, and everyone is shutting doors and talking in whispers. But put a lid on your paranoia -- this is not a development you should worry about just yet. In fact, it could signal some good news for you soon, so just wait things out and try not to worry too much in the meantime. The big issues are totally under control, and you're on a positive path -- albeit with a few bumps along the way.

Embrace Adventures

The world is awaiting me this morning. I have a lot of things to do and people to see. So I'm off. It's a little overcast but I still think it's a great day to go on an adventure. Even if the day is grey, we can sit on the bluff and look at the ocean. Hear the tides crashing against the shore. Drink a bottle of champagne and eat a cheese plate. And afterwards explore the little hamlets around there. I'm all about upgrading my life today. I think today is going to be great!

You must feel like a monkey among humans...

I was doing a quiz today, and one of the questions was this:
"Suppose one of your good friends confessed that he or she is in love with a monkey. The friend wants the monkey to be included in all activities from now on." It went on..but that was the part I found most amusing. Tim knows why.

Apple

February 18th, 2009; 1:20 AM

I've had a lot of really good talks today. -Thankfully also jokes. Because seriously..if I couldn't laugh at this situation it would be so much more depressing than it already is.
My good friend, Apple, had the best advice. He thinks I need to just go out and have sex with someone. To help me get over Joshua. "Kick him to the curb....He's in Africa." -Apple has the good fortune of having his most signifigant ex be in Africa. So although she occasionally calls...there's no real danger of ever getting hurt again. In fact, Apple has a lot of good luck that way. One of his ex's is in Africa, another is in Guatamala, and yet the future ex will soon enough be in Australia. -Not that anything is going wrong with Miss Australia ...or the urine girl as I like to call her. (-He actually picked her up while giving her his urine sample...I don't know how he does it..but it's impressive.) One of the best parts about that talk was when we were talking about love. I told him how I remembered myself before Joshua. I was really happy then. With or without love, I was good. It's really made me think about the difference between then and now, and how a really big part of me really doesn't ever want to fall in love again because it's brought so much pain that I never had before. "I don't think I want to fall in love." I said. And then he finished my sentence with "...for a while." It made me smile. It really touched my heart, that I have such a good friend, who really cares about my happiness, and doesn't want to see me get hurt anymore by Joshua. Who wants to see me happy one day, in love with someone who would be good to love.

A Lovely Beginning To The Weekend

January 10th, 2009; 1:11 AM
Current mood:adored
Cold on the outside (I have to crank the heater up a smidge)

Warm on the inside (I had a great evening out with two of the most wonderful, lovely, and very fun friends. I'm happy, slightly snookered, and dearly loved.)

Curious (as always) Tonja met BBQ today. Hahaha. I'll admit it. I think when people give themselves nick-names and then try to make other people call them that such as: "BBQ" it is all at once, a charming, and deeply amusing thought to me. I have to giggle a little bit. It's cute. I have never had a nick name that I started for myself. "V" is the most common one. Anyhoo...I am curious how it went. Simply because she left a message that sounded like he introduced himself as BBQ (to which she did not recognize -because I never call him that unless I'm joking around.) I hope it went well.

Happy. (Timmy-bean and I chatted. He advised pairing a chateauneuf du pape with brick-roasted gopher. And then we discussed pana cotta, velvet jackets, Gary Busei (sp?), and Eddie Izzard. Good times. Good times. )

Very amused. (Mark gave me a bit of humorous chiding about my deepseeded love for Whitney Houston gay-club-remixes.) She kicks ass. ...And then she shakes it!
